AGRICULTURE


Palawan is gifted with abundant agricultural land.  The Provincial government aligned its agricultural programs giving priority to the food security of the province. 

Currently, Palawan boasts of 123% rice sufficiency level.  To sustain this, agricultural events and conventions are held to ensure a continuous supply of quality and high yielding seeds.  In 2011, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist provided technical assistance to a new batch of rice seed growers such as seed inspection, seed certification, seed sampling and seed tagging. 

Agricultural extensions were provided to farmers and fisher folks thru farmer field schools and techno demo farms.

Gov. Baham continues to implement the Gulayan sa Palawan program that was started while he was the second district representative in the House of Congress.  The number of vegetable growers is increasing and for its part the Provincial Government has distributed more than two thousand packs of assorted vegetable seeds to qualified beneficiaries of the project.

The production of rubber trees have also been given a boost with the training of more than 500 rubber farmers on rubber production technology, farm lay-outing, site validation, pruning, branch induction, identification of pest and disease and recommendation of the necessary treatment and farm establishment.  More than 17,000 budded rubber seedlings were distributed to 43 farmers in 2010.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist has likewise extended technical assistance and support to corn and seaweed farmers.

With the assistance of the Department of Agriculture, the Provincial government was able to distribute various agricultural equipment and facilities in the province geared towards the promotion of organic farming.

The Bagong Sigla sa Agrikultura program of Gov. Baham was created to further extend assistance to farmers and fisher folks thru financial and technical support and market access.  Some of the inputs of the Bagong Sigla sa Agrikultura include:

• Assistance to 100 farmers toward the development of 100 hectares of land in Narra; 200 tribal farmers in Rizal for the development of 200 hectares of idle land.

• Provision of financial and technical grants to 90 fisher folks for their payao project.

• 100 cassava farmers in Aborlan have direct market linkages with San Miguel Corporation for their cassava production.

• Extension of P200,000.00 loan to Katilingban ng mga Bisaya composed of 600 member-beneficiaries to fund their various agri-livelihood projects.

• Ten farmer groups in Taytay, El Nido, Roxas and Dumaran were granted a soft loan of P50,000.00 each for their agri-livelihood projects.
